The project
Our client sells memorial keepsakes, engraved photo frames, plaques and small metal tags. Each item carries a QR code. Someone scans it at a graveside or on a shelf at home and reaches a page about the person: their photographs, a few paragraphs, video if the family has any.
We built a system that makes each of those codes exist, stay permanent, and lead somewhere that matters.
The QR code must exist before the memory does
The physical item gets made first. An order comes in, the workshop engraves the tag or prints the code, and it ships within days.
But the person who placed that order may have lost someone three weeks ago. They cannot sit down and write a considered tribute, choose between forty photographs and upload a video before the frame can be made.
So the code had to be permanent from the moment of purchase, while the page behind it could arrive days or months later. Everything else in the build follows from that one constraint.
How a keepsake becomes a memorial page

Order placed
The customer buys the keepsake on the Shopify store and adds the name to be engraved.

The application reads the new order through the Shopify API and generates a unique, permanent memorial URL against it.

What we built
Shopify order sync
New orders are read straight from the client's existing store through the Shopify API. Their team carries on working in the admin they already know.
Permanent QR links
Every order mints its own unique memorial URL. The link never changes, whatever happens to the design or the server behind it.
Print and engraving ready
QR images are generated at the point of order, ready to be engraved into metal tags or printed onto frames and cards.
A form anyone can finish
Short, plain fields with no jargon, no configuration and no time limit. Someone can complete it in five minutes or come back to it next month.
Photo and video galleries
Families upload images and video that matter. This is what people return to the page for.
Privacy controls
The family decides whether the page is open to anyone who scans it or restricts it to the people they choose.

Built on technology chosen to last

None of that is fashionable, and that was the point. A QR code engraved into metal will outlast the software behind it, so the stack was chosen for the boring qualities — long support life, easy hosting, plenty of maintainers — rather than for novelty. The link minted at order time never changes, whatever gets redesigned later.
Designing a form for someone who is grieving
The temptation with any content builder is to offer everything: layouts, themes, fonts, section ordering. For this audience, that is not generosity, it is a burden.
Someone filling this in a fortnight after a funeral does not want a design tool. They want to be asked a small number of clear questions and then be finished. So, the fields are short and plain, almost nothing is mandatory, there is no countdown or expiry, and no message in the interface congratulates anyone.
The one place we allowed real richness is photographs and video, because that is what families come back for.

How does the QR code get onto the product before the family writes anything?
The link is generated at the moment of purchase, not when the page is completed. The application reads the new Shopify order, mints a unique permanent URL and produces the matching QR image straight away, so the workshop can engrave or print it immediately. The family fills in the memorial page afterwards, in their own time, and the code works either way.
Can a memorial page be kept private?
Yes. Privacy controls let the family decide whether the page is openly visible to anyone who scans the code or restricted to the people they choose. That matters because a code on a headstone is physically accessible to any passer-by.
What technology is the QR memorial platform built with?
Laravel with a MySQL database, integrated with Shopify through its order API. The Shopify store remains the shop; the Laravel application reads orders from it, generates the memorial links and QR codes, and hosts the memorial pages.
Will the QR code still work in twenty years?
The engraved code will outlast any software, so what matters is whether the URL behind it stays stable. The link minted at order time never changes, regardless of redesigns or server migrations, and the stack was chosen for longevity rather than fashion. No vendor can honestly promise forever, and any that does should be asked how.
Can this be built for products other than memorials?
Yes.
